Some Thoughts on School

Jeannie Fulbright has a wonderful post on her blog entitled, “Am I Doing Enough?” You can find it here. I know I have asked myself that question more than once but over the years I have been doing less, not more, and I’ve wondered if that is ok.

In the younger years (K-3), I concentrate on math and language arts and don’t really do much history or science. Once my children were in 4th grade we added science and history but not every day–sometimes not every week. We’re halfway through Jeannie’s astronomy book and love it. We use TruthQuest as a guide for our history studies but I don’t add a lot of supplements, timelines or projects. We just enjoy reading the books and keeping notebooks. Is it ok to say we don’t keep a timeline?? I know all good homeschoolers keep one!!

Since we’re getting back to school after a long break, I thought about some of things I wanted to accomplish this year. I want to be more aware of the teachable moments that happen during the day and not ignore them to get “school” done. Those opportunities were appointed by God and I need to keep that appointment!! I also realize that I fall far short of setting the example and modeling the kind of behavior I want to see in my children.

A friend and I were talking last night about wanting to do this (modeling) and we realized that we do not spend enough time in the Word. If we want to be like Jesus, then we have to know Him. In order to know Him, we have to spend more time in His Word!!

But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night–Psalm 1:2

May I delight in His Word day and night!!

What say you?
