Happy Independence Day!!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and are thankful for the freedoms we have in this country.  I’m not sure how much longer we’ll have them!  I’m even more thankful for my freedom in Christ.  I am no longer a slave to sin!  “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

We are having our annual cookout and then heading to the local baseball park to watch the game and enjoy the fireworks.  Every 4th of July we treat several families to the game and cookout; it’s been a lot of fun over the years. As usual I’m making my mom’s potato salad.  We will also have the great American food of hamburgers and hot dogs. My holiday menu has been the same for many years.  It makes it simple!

The heat index is supposed to be 100 today.  Lord willing, it will cool down a little before the game begins!

Various Updates

We are on our second (or is it third) heat wave of the summer. Last week we had a break and it was so wonderful. It felt like early autumn with warm days and cool evenings. Yesterday we set a record of 103. Ouch! Today is it much cooler at 96….break out the sweaters! We just had a storm go through and that’s the first rain we’ve had here at our house since the end of May. I get a day’s break from watering my flowers.
I have been enjoying my Kindle! I take it everywhere and I’ve been reading a lot more than usual. It’s so lightweight. Today I ordered “What is the Gospel” by Greg Gilbert for free!! This is only for a limited time so order soon! (HT: Tim Challies)
There hasn’t actually been much going on these past few weeks. There are the usual homekeeping duties that keep me busy; Julianne is still doing history, algebra and Spanish through the summer but the heat has been keeping us inside for the most part.
Next week it’s supposed to be somewhat cooler so I’m planning on going blueberry picking at a nearby farm. I hope to pick enough and freeze them to last until next year. I’ve got room in my freezer and I will definitely use them. I make a lot of blueberry muffins through the year and cobblers during the summer.

I haven’t been cooking a lot but I have been grilling: Italian sausage, hamburgers, corn, chicken, etc. Yum and more yum. 🙂
Here’s a quote that I read last night from A Praying Life that really encouraged me: “The name of Jesus gives my prayers royal access. They get through. Jesus isn’t just the Savior of my soul. He’s also the Savior of my prayers. My prayers come before the throne of God as the prayers of Jesus. ‘Asking in Jesus’ name’ isn’t another thing I have to get right so my prayers are perfect. It is one more gift of God because my prayers are so imperfect.”

Have a blessed day!

This and That

This week started out slow since I was so sick but I started to fill better on Wednesday. I was so thankful to be done with that cold. It’s funny, Julianne and I were just talking last week that I haven’t had a cold in about 3 or 4 years–and I get sick. Funny!!
I made a Beef and Potato Casserole the other night. It’s one of my favorite comfort foods and reasonably easy to make. You can find it on my recipe blog, Serving Recipes at Home, here.
After years of using different rugs and mats in front of my sink and counters, I decided to purchase a GelPro kitchen floor mat. I only got it today but I can already tell the difference. It’s very cushiony and I hope it will help my feet from getting sore when I’m working.
We had Fellowship Group tonight and are making our way through Respectable Sins. One of the things we discussed in length was that nothing (or no one) causes us to get impatient or irritable. It is our own heart and sin that causes us to act that way! But we are not without hope!! God has given us the Holy Spirit and His power to overcome our sin. We have a choice whether to respond to a situation in a godly way or a sinful way.
Today it was 53 degrees and tomorrow it’s supposed to be near 60. Woot!! I love snow and I love winter but once it hits the 50’s during the day, I’m ready for spring. I noticed the buds are full on our maple tree. Spring is only a few weeks away.
Have a blessed Lord’s Day tomorrow!!
